Bolt alternatives for the AI builder, not the taxi

Bolt.new is the AI app builder from StackBlitz, the one where you describe a web app in a chat box and get a working project back. It is not the ride hailing and scooter company that owns the same word across much of Europe, and if you arrived here looking for a taxi, this is the wrong page.

The commercial shape, from its own pricing page:

• Free at $0, with a 300K token daily limit and 1M tokens a month.
• Pro at $25 per month billed monthly, starting at 10M tokens a month, with unused tokens rolling over.
• Teams at $30 per month and member, billed monthly.
• Enterprise, quoted.

The verdict in one line, before the comparison: the alternatives differ on the meter and the runtime and agree completely on the thing most people are actually unhappy about. Thanor covers that thing, and no builder does.

What you are really replacing#

Three complaints send people to this search, and only two of them have a product answer.

• Tokens ran out. The most common one. A free account burns 300K tokens faster than expected because a long revision thread carries the whole project context back through the model on every turn, so message twenty costs far more than message two even though it asks for less. This is a real constraint, and other meters behave differently under it.
• The runtime is the wrong shape. Bolt builds and runs the project in the browser, which is fast to start and awkward the moment you want something unusual in the toolchain or a dependency that expects a real machine. Editor based agents put the same class of engine next to a repository you control, at the cost of the instant preview.
• Everything comes out looking the same. The third complaint, and the one with no product answer on the shelf. Two weeks in, the fourth site has the same centred hero, the same three cards, the same gradient and the same gentle fade on scroll as the first three.

That third complaint is the one worth being careful about, because switching tools feels like it should fix it and does not. The sameness is not produced by Bolt. It is produced by a brief that did not say what the type scale was, so something downstream had to choose, and everything downstream chooses alike. The pages rhyme because nobody wrote the music.

The alternatives, side by side#

The right column is the market, not a slight. Every company in that table has reached the same conclusion on purpose.

An AI builder that arrived with a strong house style would be unusable for the agency building a client site against a brand book, and agencies are the revenue. So the sane product decision is to be exceptional at applying a look and to hold no opinion about which look is correct. All six execute that decision well.

The consequence is a hole in the workflow rather than a hole in the software. Somebody has to bring the opinion. When nobody does, a language model supplies one from the average of everything it has read, and the average of published interface work is a centred hero over three feature cards.

What design guidance actually holds#

Bolt lets you give the project standing design guidance, and that mechanism is the right place to put this. It is worth knowing what usually goes in it.

Most people write something like modern, clean, premium, lots of white space, smooth animations. Five adjectives. Read them as instructions and every one is a range rather than a value.

• Modern is a decade, not a typeface.
• Clean is a description of the result, not of the spacing rule that produced it.
• Premium is the word clients use when they mean something they cannot name.
• Smooth animations covers a 200ms linear fade and a 900ms spring equally well, and those two pages feel nothing alike.

The guidance field is a container, and the argument is about what goes in it. Filled with adjectives it changes almost nothing, because the model already had an average interpretation of every one of those words and you have just confirmed it.

Filled with values it changes everything. A palette written as hex. A type scale at a stated ratio with the desktop size spelled out. An entrance written as a named curve at a real duration. A section order with a stated reason per position. Bolt applies all of it faithfully, because applying things faithfully is precisely what it is good at.

The difference between those two fields is the difference between the sites.

The numbers no builder prints#

Test this yourself. Across roughly 110,000 indexed URLs belonging to Framer, Webflow, Lovable, Replit, Cursor and Windsurf combined:

• easing appears in three URLs.
• cubic-bezier appears in zero.

Framer publishes a design dictionary several hundred entries deep, and it is a genuinely useful reference: easing is there, so are bezier-curve, spring-animation, kerning, leading and baseline. Each entry defines the term accurately. Each entry stops immediately before the number.

That pattern is structural. A builder cannot publish the specification, because a specification exact enough to paste is a specification that works in any of the six products in the table. Print cubic-bezier(0.22, 1, 0.36, 1) at 620ms, next to #0B0B0F and a 1.25 type ratio resolving at 72px, and the reader no longer needs the canvas to reach the result. The canvas is the product being sold.

So the layer is real, useful and absent from the shelf of the people selling the surface. It has to come from somewhere else, and what it contains is a separate category of product with a completely different unit: not components, not hosting, not tokens, but decisions written down at a precision a machine can execute without interpreting. A colour, not a mood. A ratio, not a vibe. A duration in milliseconds, not the word smooth.

Give a builder that and it stops guessing, which is the only change that moves the output. Everything else on the shopping list, the meter, the runtime, the seat count, moves the invoice.

Which alternative to choose#

Match the answer to the actual complaint.

1. You ran out of tokens. Compare meters honestly. Bolt's rollover favours bursty project work. A per day message cap favours a slow steady trickle. Per site pricing at Framer and Webflow favours a handful of long lived sites over forty experiments. Run one real project through two meters for a week and read the invoices.

1. The runtime annoys you. An editor agent like Cursor puts the same class of model against a repository you own, with your toolchain and your conventions. You give up the instant preview and the hosting. Bolt against v0 and Lovable against Bolt walk through both trades.

1. Everything looks the same. No entry in the table fixes this, including the ones that ship a review pass, because a review pass measures a page against a standard and the standard is the missing thing. A proofreader is no help to a page nobody has written.

The verdict: keep Bolt and change what you put into it. It is fast, the rollover is generous for irregular work, and it will execute an exact specification exactly. The upgrade is not a different builder, it is a brief carrying real values: hex colours, a stated type ratio, named easing curves with durations, and a section order chosen for a reason. That brief is portable, so it survives whichever tool you end up on next year, which is more than can be said for a month of accumulated chat history.
